A Benefit Concert and Barbecue for George Kinney at Uncle Billy's Lake Travis

Uncle Billy’s Lake Travis to Host Benefit Concert/Barbecue for George Kinney

AUSTIN, Texas (March 3, 2011) – “Mal Thursday’s Texas Tyme Machine,” the Austin-based podcast and floating concert series, has been presenting a series of fundraisers for Austin psychedelic music legend George Kinney, to help with the costs of his cancer treatment. The next benefit concert will be an all-day show on Saturday March 19th at Uncle Billy’s Lake Travis, the popular Texas barbecue restaurant and microbrewery’s new location in the Oasis complex at 6550 Comanche Trail in Austin. The show starts at high noon and continues until after sunset.

In addition to Kinney, performing on Uncle Billy's outdoor deck will be Opie Hendrix and The Texas Tallboys, Carrie Ann Buchanan, Steve Garrett, Matthew Hebert of Haunt, and James Henry of The Shadowcasters.

Other special guests are to be announced.

Kinney was the leader of the Austin psychedelic band The Golden Dawn, whose 1968 album Power Plant is recognized as a classic of the genre. The band were friends and labelmates of The 13^th Floor Elevators. He went on to release a solo album, After the Fall in 1999 and Texas Medicine with The New Riders of the Golden Dawn in 2006. He has also published a novel, The Bandit King, and was featured in Scott Conn’s 2007 documentary Dirt Road to Psychedelia: Austin, Texas During the 1960s.
