Forever Changes and The Texas Garage Project at the Highball July 17th

Sunday night's "Texas English II: Plague of the Zombies" at The Highball was a rousing success (Chase Hamblin and the boys from Picture Book blew the doors off the place, and my co-workers from Uncle Billy's Lake Travis put the bar sales through the roof), and Mal Thursday's Texas Tyme Machine will return to the swanky ballroom and bowling emporium on July 17 with a killer double bill featuring Austin's ultimate Arthur Lee and Love tribute Forever Changes and the debut appearance of The Texas Garage Project:

Mal Thursday's Texas Tyme Machine Concert Series @ The Highball, Uncle Billy's Lake Travis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Mal Thursday's Texas Tyme Machine Concert Series To Rock The Highball, Uncle Billy's Lake Travis

AUSTIN, Texas (April 14, 2011) – “Mal Thursday’s Texas Tyme Machine,” the Austin-based podcast and floating concert series, has announced upcoming dates at The Highball in South Austin and Uncle Billy's Lake Travis.

The Highball shows kick off with a series subtitled "Texas English," starting May 8th at 10 p.m. with a show headlined by cowpunk legends The Hickoids, whose latest full-length album, Kicking It With the Twits, is a collection of British rock covers from the likes of The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Mott the Hoople. Opening the show will be "Austin's ultimate Manfred Mann tribute band," Malfred Mal, which features Texas Tyme Machine impresario Mal Thursday as Paul Jones, with Eddy Best in the dual role of Mike Vickers and Mike D'Abo, Mike Coons as Jack Bruce, and Nathaniel Klugman as Manfred Mann.

The following week's Highball show, "Texas English II: Plague of the Zombies," is hosted by Mal Thursday, this time in the guise of Anthony Newley, performing selections from his one-man show, Stop the Crowd, I Want to Smell the World. The show is headlined by Houston's Chase Hamblin Band as The Zombies, with special guest karaoke from Lauren Silva as Dusty Springfield, Jolene as Lulu, and other chanteuses to be announced.

No cover charge for either show, although donations are appreciated.

MTTTM is also producing a series of free live shows at the new Uncle Billy's Lake Travis. The series debuted on April 9 with John Evans Band, and continues this Friday April 15th with An Evening with Opie Hendrix and the Texas Tallboys. Among the artists tentatively scheduled to appear under the Texas Tyme Machine banner on the top deck of the Brewery and BBQ palace are The Thunderchiefs, Southern Backtones, The Modern Don Juans, T. Tex Edwards, The Bellfuries, and The Sideshow Tramps.

Recent Austin shows at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz (Teen A-Go-Go screening with The Ugly Beats) and Jovita's (George Kinney Wellness Jam/Benefit Concert) were great successes, and the Texas Tyme Machine series will be announcing more mixed media events, as well as more benefits, as part of the Summer series, which will also include dates in Houston and San Antonio.

The "Mal Thursday's Texas Tyme Machine" podcast has found a new home online at Mevio.com (http://texastymemachine.mevio.com). The latest episode features guest DJ Melissa Kirkendall, director of Teen A-Go-Go, spinning some of her favorite records out of Fort Worth: http://www.mevio.com/episode/275668/mal-thursday-s-texas-tyme-machine-8

A Benefit Concert for George Kinney Feb. 5th at the Highball in Austin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mal Thursday’s Texas Tyme Machine to Stage Benefits for Austin Music Legend George Kinney

AUSTIN, Texas (January 20, 2011) – "Mal Thursday’s Texas Tyme Machine," the Austin-based podcast and floating concert series, is producing a series of benefits for Austin psychedelic music legend George Kinney, who has been diagnosed with cancer of the liver. The first benefit concert will be held at the Highball in South Austin on Saturday February 5th from 4 to 10 p.m.

In addition to Kinney, performing on the show at the swank ballroom/bowling emporium will be Haunt, Thom Tex Edwards, Steve Garrett, ST 37, The Texreys, White Dress, and Austin Renaissance man Jesse Sublett, the author, artist, and musician. Sublett founded the original Austin punk band The Skunks in 1979, and is also a cancer survivor. Other special guests are to be announced.

Kinney was the leader of the Austin psychedelic band The Golden Dawn, whose 1968 album Power Plant is recognized as a classic of the genre. The band were friends and labelmates of The 13th Floor Elevators. He has continued to make music as a solo artist and with his current band The New Riders of the Golden Dawn.

Kinney will be appearing on the "Texas Tyme Machine" podcast to tell “The Golden Dawn Story” on the series’ fifth episode. The show was recently spun off from the long-running podcast “The Mal Thursday Show.”

The floating concert series will produce at least three more benefits for Kinney at other Austin venues, and possibly in Houston as well. There will also be a Texas Tyme Machine show at Beerland on Friday February 18th, headlined by San Antonio garage kings The Sons of Hercules and Dallas ’60s legends Kenny and the Kasuals.
